Evaluation of maize top crosses under two nitrogen levels Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Guedes,Fernando Lisboa; Souza,João Cândido de; Costa,Emiliano Fernandes Nassau; Reis,Matheus Costa dos; Cardoso,Gustavo Andrade; Ematné,Hugo Junqueira.
Maize crops in Brazil have a wide diversity of management systems. There is a large contingent of family agriculture, which uses little or no agricultural inputs, compared to the rural enterprise which uses the most modern production systems. This difference in the management systems is particularly noticeable in relation to consumption of fertilizers, especially nitrogenous ones. Therefore it is necessary to obtain plants with efficient nitrogen (N) use that also respond to applied nitrogen. Thus, the aim of the study was to evaluate the performance of S0:1 progenies, in top crosses, under two nitrogen levels and select the best ones based on responsiveness and efficiency. Sixty seven S0:1 progenies from populations of single cross hybrids were crossed...

Genetic progress in popcorn recurrent selection by a multivariate mixed-model approach Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Ematné,Hugo Junqueira; Nunes,José Airton Rodrigues; Souza,João Cândido de; Muñoz,Patrício Ricardo.
ABSTRACT Recurrent selection is a viable alternative for popcorn breeding. However, frequent verification of progress attained is required. The aim of this study was to estimate the genetic progress attained for popping expansion (PE) and grain yield (GY) after four cycles of recurrent selection and to compare this progress with the expected progress estimated at the end of each cycle while considering the genetic relationships between the progenies via univariate and multivariate mixed-model approaches. To estimate the genetic parameters and gains from indirect selection, cycles 1, 2, 3, and 4 of a UFLA population were used. To estimate the genetic gains achieved, the following cycles were used: UFLA (original) and cycles 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4, evaluated in...

Genetic progress of phenotypic recurrent selection in popcorn Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Ematné,Hugo Junqueira; Souza,João Cândido de; Biudes,Gustavo Barnabé; Nunes,José Airton Rodrigues; Guedes,Fernando Lisboa.
Popcorn is widely consumed in the south of Minas Gerais; however, up to now no specific breeding program for the region has been carried out. Recurrent selection (RS) is a viable alternative for breeding of this crop; nevertheless, it is necessary to frequently evaluate the progress achieved. Consequently, the purpose of this work was to assess the genetic progress obtained after two cycles of RS for the traits of popping expansion (PE) and grain yield (GY). Cycles one and two of the UFLA - E and UFLA - R populations, the original population (UFLA) and two controls were assessed. The experiment was conducted at the UFLA experimental farm in a randomized block design with eleven replications; ten agronomic traits, including PE and GY, were assessed. Gains...
